Tanzanian president urges ministers to ‘take advantage’ of refugee crises

first_imgTanzanian President John Magufuli on Friday urged his ministers to “take advantage” of refugee crises and make money by selling food to international aid organisations. The country hosts around 300 000 refugees, mainly from Burundi and Democratic Republic of Congo, largely in three camps in the north-west of the country, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council.Speaking in Dar es Salaam, Magufuli celebrated the signing of a contract to deliver 36 000 tons of maize to the UN World Food Program (WFP) for around $9.1 million.“These funds are allocated to help our refugee friends from other countries in conflict, it is our duty to take advantage of them,” said Magufuli in Swahili, to laughter in the room.“We must take advantage of their problems. They fight at home and we get the money.”After his comments in front of ministers and WFP representatives led to some snickers and giggles, the president tried to qualify his words: “I do not say that I wish they fight, but if they fight, that their conflict is a source of profit for us.”“Because even if we do not give them food, they will fight. We do not want them to fight, but if they fight, let’s take advantage of it,” he clarified.Magufuli called on the agriculture ministry and other services to seize possible business opportunities.“The market is there: if the WFP even asks for 200 000 tons, hurry up and buy from producers and give to the WFP,” he said.Tanzania sold 31 000 tons of maize to the WFP in 2018, according to the agriculture ministry.Related Tanzanian president sacks two ministers in cabinet reshuffle Somali President Mohamud visits Dadaab refugee campcenter_img President Jacob Zuma appoints new ministers and deputy ministerslast_img read more

Browns Have Had ‘Serious Talks’ with Former Steelers OC Todd Haley to Come to Cleveland

first_imgThe Browns may turn to one of their AFC North rivals for a new offensive coordinator, as Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Browns are chatting with former Steelers OC Todd Haley.Mortensen says the Browns “have engaged him in serious talks” with Haley, who left the Steelers last week after his contract was not renewed. Haley has a track record of having the Steelers at the top of the offensive rankings in the NFL, as with him as coordinator the Steelers averaged the third-most yards per play in the league. They have also put up an awful lot of points, as in the last four years they were second in the league in points scored. Of course having Antonio Brown, Le’Veon Bell and Ben Roethlisberger will help those numbers quite a bit.Despite the success the Steelers have had the last few seasons, Haley was never well liked for most part in Pittsburgh, and even this season with the team going 13-3 he took a lot of blame for the team failing in the AFC Divisional Playoff game against the Jaguars, despite the offense scoring 42 points.
