first_img 106 Views   one comment Share EducationLocalNewsTertiary Forty-four graduate from UWI Open Campus by: – April 11, 2013 Share Sharecenter_img Outstanding student, Aneesa Dailey receiving her degree from Head of UWI Open Campus Dominica, Dr. Francis SeverinThree men were among forty-four individuals who received certificates of recognition from the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Dominica on Thursday, April 11th at the Fort Young Hotel. The graduates were presented with their certificates, diplomas and degrees in their respective fields including criminology, early childhood care and education (administrators), early childhood care and education (teachers), administrative professional office management, international association of book-keepers, management, instructional design, teacher education and development and business management.Outstanding graduate, Aneesa Dailey who completed a B.Sc in Accounting with first class honors, is one of the top five students in UWI’s 42 open campus sites.During her address, Ms Daily said, having grown up in what might be considered a rural, low socio-economic environment, getting a university level education for her was “nothing more than a vague dream”. One, she however, never lost sight of.She noted that, for many of her fellow graduates and herself, the financial resources to obtain a university education were not readily available.“Like so many of us, as my life unfolded I became aware that enormous financial resources were a critical requisite element for making my dream a reality, a requirement I didn’t not have. The only solution it seemed lay in putting my shoulder to the wheel and earning the money for my educating,” said Ms Dailey. Some of the graduates at Thursday’s ceremonyAccording to the outstanding graduate, “achieving this milestone was not without its challenges” but she believes that this is what makes the realization of her dreams such an accomplishment. She told her fellow graduates, that moving forward, their lives must serve a as “living testimony of the values of responsibility, commitment and perseverance” that was etched into their character at UWI, and they should let these qualities be manifested in their daily lives.“UWI has proven to us that we can no longer allow our circumstance or where we came from to define who we are, or where we go, but by setting clear goals and working tirelessly at them, we will achieve greatness as it is the right of every individual,” she stated.Meanwhile, head of UWI Open Campus Dominica, Dr. Francis Severin said the ceremony is an indication that amidst the daily economic and social challenges that confront the nation, the region and the world, “there are positive occurrences that we must pause to take notice of”.Dr. Severin noted further that in spite of the economic burdens institutions of higher education are faced with, the UWI Open Campus has been playing its role by extending the reach of the UWI across the region, particularly to those in under serviced areas.Head of UWI Open Campus Dominica, Dr. Francis Severin“You deserve our highest commendations for your accomplishment and I urge you to continue to earn, learn, learn. You have earned your certificates, diplomas and degrees fair and square and because of the excellent education you have gained in various fields, you must remain humble,” Dr Severin said.He told them, as citizens of Dominica, their primary aim should be nation building.“We must lead, serve and when necessary, follow. You should not do what everyone else does; you should not surrender to selfishness. You are educated to help our education and the government. Government cannot do it alone,” Dr Severin cautioned.[nggallery id=295]Dominica Vibes News Tweet Sharing is caring!last_img read more
